Jon Carter was born in Nottingham (Calverton) on December 22 1979. He lived at Calverton with his father,
Malcolm, his mother Linda and two sisters Ella and Faye and attended the Manor Park School.
The family emigrated to California in 1985, where his brother, Kyle, was born. While attending college in
Santa Barbara, California, Jon was so devastated by the September 11th Twin Tower attack, that he called his
parents and told them he was going to join the United States Army, although still a British citizen. After training
in South Carolina, he moved to Giessen, Germany as a member of the 527th Company Military Police.
Jack and Phyllis Atherley, Jons grand-parents, celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary in late December 2002
and Jon was allowed a 48 hour furlough to attend the celebrations in Calverton on 22nd. The following day Jon
returned to Germany and a few weeks later flew to Kuwait for the start of the 2003 Iraq conflict.
