Before entering Parliament he worked as a Project Leader for the Church of England Children's Society (1979-83) and as a Social Worker (1972-1979). In 1992 he became M.P. for Sherwood. His Ministerial Jobs have included National Convenor of the Party Chair's Campaign Team. Parliamentary Secretary of the Privy Council Office (1999-2001). Deputy Leader of the House of Commons. Personal Private Secretary to the Home Secretary (1997-98).
He is a member of the Co-operative Party, UNISON, Vice-President of the National Ramblers Association. Former Chair of Central Region Labour Member's Group. Former Secretary of the Parliamentary Home Affairs Committee. Former Secretary of the All-Party Epilepsy Group and a Past Member of the Select Committee for Parliamentary Commissioner for Administration.
